Yoga Nidra is a practice of deep conscious rest. During the practice you lie down comfortably, close your eyes, and simply follow a gentle voice guiding your attention. The body gradually releases tension, the mind begins to settle, and the nervous system has space to shift from a state of stress and constant activity into safety, rest, and regeneration. In this space between waking and sleeping, the body can truly rest and restore. In this deeply regenerative state, subtle but meaningful inner changes can begin to happen – in the body, in the mind, and in the way we experience ourselves.
How the practice works
During Yoga Nidra you usually lie on your back, covered with a blanket so the body can fully relax. There is nothing you need to do and nothing you need to achieve. You simply listen and allow your attention to gently move through the body, the breath, and your inner experience.
As the body relaxes more deeply, the mind becomes quieter. This allows the nervous system to slowly regulate and release tension that we often carry for a long time without even realizing it.
What you might experience
Every practice can feel a little different. Sometimes people notice deep physical relaxation, sometimes a quiet and spacious mind. You may experience body sensations, images, emotions, or simply a very deep sense of rest.
Some people fall asleep during Yoga Nidra, and that is completely natural. Even then the body still receives the benefits of rest and the nervous system can gradually return toward balance.
How to prepare for the practice
Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. It is best to lie down on a yoga mat, sofa, or bed, and cover yourself with a blanket so the body stays warm and comfortable. You may also place a pillow under your head or knees if that helps your body relax more easily.
No previous experience is needed. The only thing required is the willingness to pause for a moment, close your eyes, and allow yourself to truly rest. 🌙
